Founded in 1922, McHenry Golf Club has stood as a proud fixture in McHenry County for over 100 years. From humble beginnings as a 9-hole course to its evolution into a championship-level 18-hole facility, our history is deeply intertwined with the growth of the community and the game itself.

1922 – Founding & First Fairways

Three determined men built the original clubhouse in a single day—a modest 14' x 30' structure with only a lunch counter and restrooms. The original 9-hole course was quickly embraced by locals seeking recreation and camaraderie.

1925–1926 – The Full 18

Construction of the back nine began in 1925 and was completed in 1926, transforming McHenry into a full 18-hole course and a true country club destination.

1953 – Major Course & Clubhouse Renovation

Key enhancements included lengthening several holes, planting more trees, adding sand traps, and rebuilding the greens. A new clubhouse was constructed, offering members a more modern and welcoming facility.

1970 & 1988 – Clubhouse Expansion

The clubhouse underwent renovations to accommodate the growing membership and elevate the dining and social experiences for guests and members alike.

2003 – A New Era Begins

A multi-million dollar renovation modernized the clubhouse interior, added elegant event spaces, and enhanced the panoramic views of the Fox River.

Today, while the hole layout has remained mostly unchanged, continuous improvements in landscaping and infrastructure keep the course competitive, beautiful, and revered.

The Adams Legacy: Birthplace of the Metal Wood

McHenry Golf Club holds a special place in golf history as the launching ground of the metal wood revolution, thanks to longtime head golf professional Vale Adams and his son Gary V. Adams.

Vale Adams (1962–1981)
Vale led the club through two decades of growth and transformation, becoming a mentor to many and an anchor of the club’s reputation for professionalism and hospitality.

Gary V. Adams – The Innovator
Gary, who learned the game at McHenry, went on to change the face of modern golf by inventing the metal wood and founding TaylorMade Golf in McHenry, IL. His revolutionary club design helped usher in a new era of play and continues to shape the industry today.

Gary also launched Founders Club and McHenry Metals, solidifying his place as one of the most influential figures in golf equipment innovation.

Honoring His Legacy

The TaylorMade Tree: Located by the 10th tee, this tree was dedicated in 2009 as a tribute to Gary's impact.

The Walking Bridge on Hole 8: Dedicated in Gary’s memory, this bridge honors the connection between McHenry and golf’s future.

The Adams Invitational: An annual tournament held in Gary's honor that brings the community together to celebrate innovation, sportsmanship, and club tradition.

The Heritage Room: Inside the clubhouse, visitors can view early metal wood prototypes and memorabilia honoring the Adams family legacy.
